Intro

Si Bitcoin représente l’avènement du cash sur Internet, Ethereum est celui d’un ordinateur mondial décentralisé, muni d’un système d’exploitation appelé EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) et de programmes appelés smart contracts (contrats intelligents). Le carburant alimentant le fonctionnement de cet ordinateur global est appelé gas et est fourni sous forme d’ETH (la devise native d’Ethereum) aux mineurs par les utilisateurs.

Comme sur un ordinateur personnel, l’accès à un programme spécifique localisé dans la mémoire de l’EVM se fait selon un système d’adressage, c’est-à-dire selon un mécanisme d’indexage physique ou virtuel au sein de la mémoire. Ainsi lorsqu’on parlera de l’adresse d’un compte ou d’un contrat, cela peut se représenter comme un emplacement mémoire dans la machine Ethereum. Lorsqu’un contrat est déployé, un ensemble d’instructions est écrit à l’adresse mémoire du contrat sous forme d’opcode ( = code source du contrat traduit en langage machine).

Ainsi, afin d’interagir avec un protocole DeFi, un utilisateur va communiquer avec un contrat. Pour simplifier la vie des utilisateurs, les développeurs de protocoles DeFi mettent en place des interfaces entre utilisateurs et contrats appelées UI (User Interface / Interface Utilisateur) ou frontends. Ces interfaces présentent sous forme interactive (souvent graphique) les diverses fonctions d’un protocole et traduisent les actions des utilisateurs en requêtes auprès des contrats, ainsi que leurs réponses. En d’autres termes, la blockchain Ethereum peut être vue comme un *backend *(une arrière-boutique) de la DeFi.

Dernière chose à noter avant d’attaquer le concret, un contrat est composé grosso modo de variables et de fonctions. Il est important de bien distinguer les fonctions “en lecture” (read) des fonctions “en écriture” (write) car les premières sont des consultations de l’état de la machine Ethereum et ne coûtent rien en gas, tandis que les secondes écrivent dans l’EVM ce qui a conséquemment un coût. En effet, les changements d’états de l’EVM, que l’on appelle transactions, doivent être minées, c’est-à-dire écrites dans un bloc, et demandent une dépense de carburant afin de rétribuer le réseau. En Solidity, le langage dans lequel sont rédigés la plupart des contrats sur Ethereum, une fonction en lecture est appelée “view function”.

Alors, comment fonctionnent les contrats sur Ethereum ? Pour prendre un parallèle caricatural, on peut imaginer un monde muni d’une banque qui a 3 clients : Alice, Bob, et Charlie, et une infra en Python stockant l’état des comptes dans un *dictionnaire *global qui tient lieu de registre.

Pour consulter le solde d’un compte, M. Pactoll (le banquier) pourra appeler la fonction suivante.

Il s’agit d’une fonction “en lecture”.

Il s’agit là de fonctions en écriture qui changent l’état global de la liste des soldes.

Cas d’usage

Comme évoqué précédemment, l’interaction avec des contrats se fait via des appels de fonctions. Fonctions “view“ pour la lecture, fonctions générales pour l’écriture.

Voyons maintenant comment interagir avec des contrats sur la blockchain Ethereum au travers de cas concrets.

Note technique : les transactions suivantes seront effectuées avec le compte cryptotaz.eth. Pour en consulter l’historique, le lecteur pourra utiliser Debank ou Impersonator.

Situation 1 : révocation d’allocation

Pour notre première illustration, Alice souhaite échanger (swap) des USDC.e pour des MATIC sur Polygon. Alice dispose de 1.908 USDC.e . Ci-dessous l’interface de l’agrégateur Odos.

Alice sait qu’en DeFi, pour transférer des tokens ERC-20 à un contrat, cela se fait en deux étapes : 1) approuver un montant en tokens vis-à-vis du contrat (appel d’une fonction approve() ) et 2) laisser le contrat prélever les tokens (appel d’une fonction transferFrom() ).

Elle approuve donc sur MetaMask / Rabby / Frame (éventuellement avec son Ledger Nano) l’allocation d’USDC.e :

Soudain elle se rend compte qu’elle a approuvé un prélèvement illimité auprès du contrat routeur d’Odos.

Ce qu’elle peut voir sur le frontend Revoke Cash de Rosco Kalis.

Exercice 1 : sur le lien précédent, aller dans l’onglet “More Details → Click to show more”
et comprendre les données qui ont été envoyées comme arguments de l’appel à la fonction approve() dans la section Input Data.

Vite, Alice utilise l’interface de Revoke Cash pour annuler son approbation.

Dans les coulisses, la révocation consiste à mettre à jour le montant de l’allocation “Spending Cap“ à 0.

Ouf, l’allocation a été révoquée.

Mais Alice ne peut plus swapper ses USDC.e .

Elle va donc ré-approuver ses USDC.e auprès du routeur d’Odos.

Etourdie qu’elle est, Alice a encore oublié d’ajuster le montant à approuver. Elle va donc vouloir révoquer l’allocation. Mais pas de chance, Revoke Cash est down.

Heureusement, Alice sait qu’elle peut utiliser Polygonscan (équivalent d’Etherscan sur Polygon) et elle connaît l’adresse du token USDC.e, qui suit le standard ERC-20.

Sur Etherscan et assimilés, les déployeurs de contrats ont la possibilité d’uploader le code source. Cela permet par la suite aux utilisateurs non seulement d’avoir accès au code source du contrat (onglet Contract / Code), mais également d’interagir avec les fonctions publiques, en lecture (onglet Contract / Read Contract) et en écriture (Contract / Write Contract).

Ici le contrat du token USDC.e est un proxy (cela signifie que le contrat du token est un pointeur vers un autre contrat, cela permet aux créateurs du contrat de redéployer USDC.e si besoin sans en changer l’adresse principale). Bref Alice lit le contrat comme un proxy.

Elle peut demander son solde (balance),ce qui correspond à appeler la “fonction view” balanceOf(). Elle indique pour cela l’adresse de son wallet en argument.

À noter que
* l’argument account est de type address, Alice doit donc indiquer une adresse Ethereum valide
* la réponse (ce qui est retourné par l’appel de la fonction) est un nombre entier (type uint256), et comme le token USDC.e a 6 décimales, elle correspond à balance = 1.907921 USDC.e .

Alice peut aussi demander l’allocation d’USDC.e auprès du routeur d’Odos :

Constatant que le routeur peut prélever tous les USDC.e d’Alice, celle-ci décide d’y remédier en appelant une fonction écrivant sur la blockchain :

plus précisément en connectant son wallet web3 à Polyscan/Etherscan puis en appelant la fonction approve avec comme arguments
* spender : le contrat auprès duquel se fait l’allocation, ici l’adresse du routeur Odos
* amount : le montant à approuver (ici zéro, pour révoquer l’allocation)

Voilà, l’allocation a de nouveau été révoquée !

Situation 2 : verrouillage d’un jeton de gouvernance

Maverick est un échange décentralisé sur Ethereum. Pour obtenir du pouvoir de vote sur le protocol Maverick, Alice souhaite acquérir du veMAV (voting-escrow MAV), une représentation non-transférable du verrouillage du token natif du protocole, MAV. Ce modèle de gouvernance est basé sur celui de Curve. Alice possède des MAV, comment les convertir ?

Alice se rend sur la page de staking de MAV.

Elle constate que le frontend propose quatre options temporelles : 1, 2, 3, ou 4 ans.

Alice va trouver et lire les contrats du MAV et du veMAV .

Que disent-ils ?
Le code de veMAV File 27 of 27 : VotingEscrow.sol précise :

Alice conclut qu’il est possible de verrouiller (stake comme dit Maverick) ses MAV pour des durées différentes que celles proposées par l’UI, à savoir des durées arbitraires comprises entre une semaine et quatre ans.

Ainsi elle pourra appeler la fonction

en spécifiant une durée comprise entre minStakeDuration et maxStakeDuration.

Exercice 2 : lire la fonction interne _stake() dans le contrat.
Comprendre la ligne mav.safeTransferFrom(msg.sender, address(this), amount);
Que devra d’abord faire Alice avant d’appeler stake() ?

Exercice 3 : quels sont les arguments qu’Alice devra passer à la fonction en écriture stake() pour verrouiller 10000 MAV pendant 4 ans moins un jour, ce qui pourra lui permettre de déverrouiller ses MAV avant tous ceux qui ont staké (le même jour) pendant exactement quatre ans via l’UI.
